Consists of 2 displays and the ECAM control panel. The upper display is the E/WD, and the lower screen is the S/D. The displays are turned on or off using the brightness controls. If a screen fails, the E/WD takes priority, and pages on the S/D are displayed by holding the associated pb sw on the ECAM control panel.
Data is input from aircraft system sensors around the aircraft into 3 DMCs. For the majority of systems, sensor data is supplied to 2 SDACs [System Data Acquisition Concentrator] which process the data before sending it to the DMCs. Data is also fed to FWCs [Flight Warning Computer] from aircraft sensors for red warnings, and from the SDACs [System Data Acquisition Concentrator] for amber warnings.
Normally, DMC3 supplies the ECAM system, with DMC1 and DMC2 acting as backup.
White | titles and remarks |
Blue | action items |
Magenta | messages that apply to particular equipment or situations |
Green | normal |
Amber | abnormal requiring crew awareness but not immediate crew action |
Red | serious parameter exceedance and warnings requiring immediate crew action |
When a parameter approaches a limit, it will pulse (green - gray - green etc.).
When a failure occurs leading to a loss of redundancy or a system not affecting safety, an amber message is displayed on the E/WD and the CLR buttons on the ECAM control panel illuminate. Pressing CLR clears the message and the status page is displayed automatically.
A warning causes the MASTER WARN to illuminate and a continuous repetitve chime to sound, as well as a red message to be displayed on the E/WD.
Level | Signification | Aural | Visual
Failure Mode | 3 | red, danger | continuous repetitive chime (CRC) or specific sound or voice | MASTER WARN, warning message, page displayed |
2 | amber, no direct consequence | single chime (SC) | MASTER CAUT, caution message, page displayed
1 | amber, loss of redundancy | none | caution message
Information | advisory | parameter monitoring | none | page displayed, parameter pulses |
memo | information | none | message |
Type | Description | Indication |
Primary | a failure that will affect other systems | boxed message |
Secondary | failures resulting from primary failures | message preceeded by |
Independent | failure affects an isolated system |
