Igniters

There are 2 igniters in the combustion chamber, A and B. They alternate on successive starts, although both igniters are used for a restart attempt following a start abort, for a manual start, and for an in flight start.

Continuous ignition is selected by moving the ENG START selector to IGN/START. This powers both A and B igniters. Ignition is automatically on when:

  • engine anti-ice is used (Not all A330 versions)
  • for 10s after an engine flame out
  • for 10s in the event of inadvertent cycling of the master lever with the engine running

Normally the FADEC receives inputs for the ignition and starting system from the EIU. If the EIU signal is lost, all functions except manual start and wet crank remain available.
