ECS

Environmental control system

The total airflow entering the cabin is approximately 52% fresh air and 48% recirculation air.

Air temperature control

Cabin temperature can be set from the cockpit, or transferred to the flight attendant control panel. The flight attendant control panel has temperature select knobs connected directly to the AMS controller.

E-Bay fans

Aft0 - cooling from passenger cabin air

Emergency ram air

Emergency ram air ducting is provided for when both packs are off inflight at <25,000'.

Gasper system

The gasper shutoff valve remains closed unless the air supply exceeds 35°C.

Packs

During normal operation, pack 1 controls airflow to the flight deck, while pack 2 controls airflow to the cabin.

The packs will be closed if any of the following occur:

  • a bleed air source is not available for that pack
  • the respective pack button is off
  • any engine is starting with WOW (both packs close)
  • the respective engine is starting, no WOW, and the opposite engine is not starting
  • any engine is starting with APU as the bleed source (both packs close)
  • respective bleed system duct leak
  • respective pack's BIT is present (EICAS message)

During takeoff, the FADEC sends an ECS OFF signal to close the packs if any of the following occur:

  • OEI and APU bleed unavailable
  • thrust levers MAX and APU bleed unavailable
  • TDS REF ECS OFF on MCDU and APU bleed unavailable
  • TDS REF ECS OFF on MCDU and TDS REF A/I ALL on MCDU

The packs are recovered after:

  • a thrust reduction
  • >500' afe
  • >9,700' afe OEI (airfield at or below 8,000')
  • >15,000' afe OEI (airfield above 8,000')

Recirculation fans

Located in the pressurised section of the airplane, these 2 fans recirculate air into the cabin and cockpit via a mixer. The fans are commanded off if smoke is detected in the recirculation bay, or if the DUMP button is pressed.
